12. A Cheery Reunion

Elijah nearly turned and ran when the angel on top of the fountain raised her head and opened her eyes. Her movements weren’t stiff or jerky. Instead, everything about her was smooth and graceful, and her eyes burned like silver embers. With an elegant sweep of her arm, she tossed her hair over her shoulder and straightened fully. As her wings unfurled, the birds that were perched on her launched into a startled flight.

As if woken by this movement, the four cherubs opened their eyes and fluttered into the air. They swooped down to the pool at the base of the fountain, returning with overflowing handfuls of the silvery dust. Holding their cupped hands to their chests, they flew back to the top of the fountain. They swarmed around each other, seeming to build something out of the silver dust. It was only when they were about halfway done that Elijah realized what they were making.

A shimmering, delicate staircase stretched down from the top of the fountain. When the cherubs had finished, they flew back to their original positions and perched on the fountain again. They were still very much awake and rather excited about what was going to happen if their wildly fluttering wings were anything to judge by. The angel looked down at them and smiled. And then, as if she knew the little cherubs couldn’t wait any longer, she floated up into the air and reached a hand down to the top of the fountain. Another hand reached up to take hers. A tan, calloused hand that was very familiar to Elijah.

Kyrra watched in awe as the stone angel helped Gabriel climb out of the pedestal. She watched as he fearlessly descended the fragile silver staircase with the same casual ease he did everything with. Close behind him came Esther, Mage Tallows, Sir Kenneth, and last, but not least, the Tebbit twins. The entire party proceeded past them as if the whole situation was completely normal. The Tebbit twins even went so far as to stick their tongues out and raise an eyebrow as they walked past. Kyrra sighed and shook her head. It was time to go. The angel had returned to where she had started, and the wall of mist was beginning to dissolve.

The stone angel looked down at the two young people at the base of her fountain. She remembered sitting on the Council when Elijah’s sister came. It was remarkable how resilient and brave these young people were. She smiled gently, and in a soft whisper meant for only their ears said, “Good luck, my little heroes. I know you will do what you must.” She saw as they looked up at her with surprise and then looked at each other. She saw as they confirmed that they had both heard the strange whisper. And she saw as they glanced back at her one last time and turned to catch up with their companions.

“I will rejoin you someday soon,” she murmured to herself.
